Self-taught musician Liz Larin recorded her first CD in England. She signed with Atlantic Records establishing an international fan base, and now has a new CD as she finds herself back home in Detroit.
“I’ve been all over the world – my CD’s have done best in Europe,” Larin said. “I have a nice fan base over there, just like I do in the U.S.”
Larin’s new CD, “Wake Up, Start Dreaming,” is scheduled for release on Bona Dea Music on Nov. 22, but not before a CD release party at 10 p.m. Saturday at Memphis Smoke, 100 S. Main St., in Royal Oak.
“If you want to make it in this business you have to go to L.A. and travel to places like Australia and Germany, places I have a big fan base,” Larin said in a phone interview. “But I came back to Detroit and wanted to do it here. I was not willing to live without my family and friends.”
“Wake Up, Start Dreaming,” is Larin’s follow up to “Story of O-Miz,” which took home multiple music awards, including the Detroit Music Award for Outstanding CD.
“I like to dig deep and write about things that evoke,” Larin said.
Larin, who grew up in St. Clair Shores and later moved to Birmingham, said she enjoys working in partnership with people, although producing her own music allows her to move quickly.
“I write so much and it’s better for me to have a lot of projects going at the same time,” she said. “I’m all over the place.”
Larin said it is difficult to keep up with the rest of “Today’s music’ since she is being pulled by forces such as recording, producing,m traveling and thinking about the next gig.
“The Internet allows you to be impressed with a lot of people,” Larin said. “I am so sensitive to music. I don’t generally fo to concerts. My iPod is attached to my purse. I’m constantly downloading random music to listen to later.”
Larin considers her worldwide fan base “and interesting audience of thinkers.”
“I get a lot of feedback on the songs,” she said. “People like to analyze the lyrics and the ideas behind the music. I love to get correspondence from the fans. Peple are guessing and that’s interesting to me.”
Larin said with two CD’s on Atlantic Records and three CD’s on Bona Dea Music, her new CD is the beginning of another chapter.
“Life’s been a transformation,” she said. “It’s nice to know you can be successful and stay in Detroit. It feels good to things nationally, thinking global, yet act and live locally.”
Larin, a songwriter who began her career with Michael King in the duo Press in the early 1980’s and later move to Los Angeles, will bring Robert Tye on guitar, James Simonson on bass and David Taylor on drums with her to Memphis Smoke.
“I can go from a poetic whisper to something really growly, sexy and spiritual,” Larin said of her live performances. “That’s the freedom that I have.”
Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, Larin found inspiration through Stevie Wonder on the radio.
“He was the kid making music,” Larin said. “I started writing and playing music when I was 10. Like the Jackson 5, I armed you could jump in a do it.”
Larin learned how to plya the guitar and eventually mastered all instruments she was interested in, still her music is defined by her passion.
“I play bass, keyboards, and create a lot of sounds and sonic landscapes,” she said. “If you stick to your passion and speak from your heart eventually they come and find you.”

A CD release party for Liz Larin is 10:00 p.m. Nov. 19 at Memphis Smoke, 100 S. Main St. in Royal Oak. Call (248) 543-4300.
