Liz Larin blends pop, R&B and rock into a sexy, strong sound.
Liz Larin, the Detroit darling who has won 15 Detroit Music Awards, isn't afraid of musical risks on her new CD Wake Up, Start Dreaming.
Her long-awaited CD is packed with 12 songs that blend elements of rock, pop, and R&B. She'll host a CD release party on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Memphis Smoke in Royal Oak.
Larin's popularity has been bursting locally for years and began with an underground buzz. Her popularity and reputation in Detroit is solid.
Larin, a self-taught musician, was exposed at a young age to the bebop jazz and those sounds helped inspire her.
"My grandmother had a huge collection of amazing LPs and a highly polished grand piano in the front room, where she would play for us while we danced," Larin said. "I always loved her stories about the legendary artists she heard perform at storied jazz club Baker's Keyboard Lounge."
When Larin was 10, she dabbled in songwriting and taught herself guitar and piano and later was professionally trained.
After taking a few lessons she was asked to join the teaching staff, the youngest teacher there at 15.
"It was like having a bunch of crazy uncles, all musicians, who helped me make the transition to being a professional. They took me under their wings, encouraging me to pursue my passion for jazz, funk, rock and great songwriting." She played music in churches, in high school rock bands and then branched out into the Detroit music scene. She landed a deal with Atlantic Records and recorded her first CD in England with producer Rupert Hine. She's built a fan base in England, Australia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
She spent time living in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles working with influential producer Ben Gross. But she calls Detroit home and settled back here. Detroit, she says, is her inspiration and feeds her creative spirit.
