LIZ LARIN - ARTIST OF WEEK - Calendar The Detroit News February 7th, 2003by Melody Baetens
Guitarist and songwriter Liz Larin has had an impressive music career. She started playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 10. She was performing at 12, and by the time she had graduated high school, Larin was touring.
Larin also was signed to Atlantic Records for a time and has won several local music awards for her solo recordings.
Seemingly an artist who has done it all, Larin now focuses her talent and energy into creating a united front for women artists. In 2002, she started Venus Ball Productions with a small group of Metro Detroit female artists.
“There are so many of us female musicians,” Larin says. “The time is right for us to do something like this, to get together and get to know each other. It’s kind of like being in a support group - to get our name out there, support the music, get better at what we’re doing. It’s been a really good experience.”
The first Venus Ball event took place at the Magic Bag in December. The bill included Liz Larin, R.I.B., S.A.R., Ravenwood and Stacia and was hosted by Linda Lexy. The sold-out show was a success.
“It was crazy; rumor had it there were about 400 people there,” Larin says. “It was really the women’s night. Everybody could do what they wanted to, everyone’s personality was stamped on it.”
The Second Venus Ball will be held at the Magic bag on Valentine’s Day, February 14. This time, the line-up includes Larin, Tamara Bedricky, R.I.B, S.A.R. and Barbara Payton.
