Consider the cat officially out of the bag.
Locally favored acoustic-rock goddess Liz Larin may be on the verge of claiming the same superstardom achieved by the Motor City’s current trifecta of cool - Eminem, The White Stripes and The Funk Brothers. Larin trumped the year’s hottest national acts - all three from the Motor City - at the 2003 Detroit Music Awards.
WIth this in mind, Larin’s days of more intimate performances are likely numbered, so you’d better catch her while you can.
Fortunately, the singer-songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist makes a rare Ann Arbor appearance and kicks off a mini-five-concert tour of Borders stores with an apprearance at Borders Downtown tonight.
Expect an hourlong set of edgy, introspective and sex-charged tracks from her latest disc, “The Story of Omit”, the second album she’s released on her own label, Bona Dea Music, followed by a CD-signing session.
In Addition, customers who purchase the album at Borders before September 7 are eligible to receive a free-limited edition Liz Larin T-shirt.
“The Story of Omit,’ like it’s 1999 predecessor, “Merry Wicked,” is steeped in the urgency and intensity of the Detroit music scene - elements missing from the music she wrote, recorded and released while living in L.A.
As a result, “The Story of Omit,” received a staggering 10 Detroit Music Award nominations, and Larin staked her claim to six of those prizes, more than any other honoree at the April award show.
Larin’s trophies include out-standing rock/po album of the year, outstanding rock/pop vocalist, outstanding pop artist, outstanding rock/pop instrumentalist, outstanding acoustic songwriter and outstanding acoustic vocalist.
Liz Larin performs a free concert at 7:00 tonight (Thursday) at Borders Downtown, 612 E. Liberty Street. Information: (734) 668-7652.
